Swiss lasers and brakes on fab floors

Bystronic, the Swiss sheet metal company, makes lasers, press brakes and automation that are common in Illinois fabrication shops. ByStar Fiber and BySpeed lasers, older ByStar CO2 machines, Xpert and Xact press brakes, and ByTrans and other loading systems run in job shops and contract fabricators across the Chicago area.

LocalSpindle techs work on Bystronic lasers, press brakes and automation, including controls, drives, hydraulics, cutting heads, chillers and loading systems.

Bystronic lasers

Bystronic fiber lasers have problems with cut quality, piercing, nozzles and the cutting head, focus, protective windows, chillers and assist gas. Older CO2 machines add beam delivery and resonator issues. Most cut quality problems come from consumables, gas, focus or settings, but motion problems, like a worn rack and pinion, a loose gantry or a servo issue, can also show up as rough or uneven cuts.

We check the simple causes first and work toward the complex ones, and we look at the motion system when a cut problem shows up in some directions but not others.

Xpert and Bystronic press brakes

Bystronic Xpert press brakes are common in fabrication shops. Their problems include angle inconsistency, backgauge positioning errors, hydraulic issues, crowning and safety system faults. We check ram parallelism, crowning, hydraulics, backgauge calibration and tooling before changing settings.

Loading and automation

Many Bystronic lasers run with automated loading and unloading. When automation fails, the laser stops. Common problems include suction cup and vacuum issues, sheet separation problems, sensor faults and communication between the loader and the laser. We troubleshoot the whole system.

What goes wrong on Bystronic machines

On Bystronic lasers, the cutting head, the gas supply and the chiller decide most of the cut quality problems. On older ByStar CO2 lasers, beam delivery and resonator maintenance add to the list.

On Xpert brakes, angle accuracy and backgauge positioning are the usual complaints. Most come down to calibration, crowning, tooling and hydraulics.

Xpert press brake troubleshooting

Xpert brakes measure and correct angles on many models, which makes them accurate when everything is working. When angles drift, we check the angle measuring system, the crowning and the hydraulics, then calibrate the backgauge.

Hydraulic Xperts have the usual wear: valves, seals and pumps. Electric models have drive and motor issues instead.

Safety systems, like light curtains and laser guards, cause a lot of nuisance stops. We align and test them.

Example service call

ByStar Fiber cutting rough on mild steel

The call

A fabrication shop in Schaumburg saw rough edges and dross on mild steel parts.

What we did

  1. Phone. Rough edges that came on gradually pointed at the cutting head or gas.
  2. On site. The nozzle was damaged and off-center, and the protective glass had spatter.
  3. Fix. Replaced the nozzle and glass and centered the beam.
  4. Check. Cut test parts in several thicknesses.

The result. Clean cuts again.

A typical example of how these calls go, written to show our process. It isn’t a specific customer.
