Hypertherm repair in Illinois

Plasma on most Illinois cutting tables

Hypertherm, based in New Hampshire, makes the plasma systems on a large share of the CNC plasma tables in Illinois fabrication shops, steel service centers, structural steel shops and equipment builders. You’ll see Powermax systems on smaller tables, HPR and XPR systems on high-definition production tables, and MAXPRO200 systems on heavy cutting tables. Many tables also use Hypertherm CNCs, software and torch height controls.

LocalSpindle techs work on Hypertherm plasma systems and on the tables they’re mounted on, including the CNC, torch height control, gantry motion, drives and the gas and cooling systems.

Cut quality problems

Most plasma cut quality problems come from consumables, gas, height and speed. Worn electrodes and nozzles, the wrong consumables for the amperage, wet or contaminated air, wrong gas pressures, incorrect cut height and the wrong cut speed all cause dross, bevel, rough edges and poor hole quality.

We start with those basics before looking deeper. Then we check the torch, the torch lead, the coolant system on liquid-cooled torches, the gas console and the power supply.

Torch height control and the table

Torch height control keeps the torch at the right distance from the plate during the cut. When the height control isn’t working right, the torch can dive into the plate, crash, or cut too high. Problems can come from the height control itself, the lifter, voltage sensing, the ohmic contact system or the CNC settings.

The table’s motion also affects cut quality. Worn rack and pinion, loose gantry bearings, servo tuning problems and table flatness all show up in parts. We check the table along with the plasma system.

Power supply and gas console problems

Hypertherm power supplies and gas consoles have their own diagnostics, with error codes that point to specific problems. Common problems include coolant flow and temperature faults, gas pressure faults, power supply and inverter faults, and communication problems with the CNC. We read the error codes, test the components, and repair or replace what’s failing.

Plasma basics

Most plasma problems start at the torch

Plasma cut quality depends on consumables, gas, height control and speed. A shop that sees bevel, dross or short consumable life usually has one of those out of line. We start at the torch and work back to the power supply.

When the power supply itself faults, Hypertherm’s error codes are a good guide. We troubleshoot the power supply, the gas console, the torch leads and the interface to the table control.

What a plasma visit covers

The table matters too

Plasma cut quality isn't only about the power supply

A plasma table’s motion, squareness and height control decide a lot of the cut quality. A table that’s out of square cuts parts out of square. A lifter that sticks causes dive and bevel. A ground that’s dirty or loose causes arc problems.

We check the gantry, rails, drives, the lifter, the work clamp and the ground path along with the plasma system.

Fume extraction and water tables also need care. A clogged downdraft or a low water table affects cut quality and the shop.

From the field

Plasma habits

01

Change consumables in sets

A new nozzle with an old electrode wastes both.

02

Keep compressed air dry

Wet air ruins consumables and cut quality.
