Makino machining center and EDM repair in Illinois

Makino horizontals run around the clock in Illinois production plants, and Makino EDMs sit in the region’s mold and die shops. When one stops, a whole cell stops. We repair them on your floor.

Makino repair in Illinois

Production horizontals, mold mills and EDMs

Makino is known for high-performance horizontal machining centers, precision verticals and EDMs, and Illinois production shops, moldmakers and aerospace suppliers rely on them. You’ll see Makino a51, a61, a81 and a92 horizontals in production cells, PS and F-series verticals in job shops and mold shops, and Makino wire and sinker EDMs in toolrooms and die shops.

Makino’s machining centers use Fanuc-based controls with Makino’s Professional interface, and its EDMs use Makino’s own controls. LocalSpindle techs work on Makino’s Fanuc electronics, the Makino-specific logic and options, and the mechanics of its spindles, pallet changers and tool magazines.

Horizontals in production cells

Makino horizontals often run in multi-pallet cells, sometimes with automated pallet systems or MMC-style storage. They run long hours on production work, so their common problems come from wear and from the complexity of the automation: pallet change faults, rotary table clamp and index problems, tool magazine and changer problems, spindle wear, chip and coolant system failures and high-pressure coolant pump issues.

We repair the machine and the cell, and we know that a cell stopping because of a single sensor or a stuck pallet is a big problem for a production shop. We work quickly and test the cell through repeated cycles before we leave.

Precision verticals and mold work

Makino verticals are common in mold and die shops, where they’re used for hard milling, graphite machining and fine finishing. Those shops care about spindle condition, thermal stability and surface finish. Spindle bearing wear, thermal growth, axis tuning and way lube problems can show up as finish and accuracy problems before they show up as alarms. We check them carefully.

Makino EDMs

Makino wire EDMs and sinker EDMs are common in Illinois toolrooms. Wire EDM problems include auto-threading failures, wire breaks, filtration and resin issues, and accuracy problems. Sinker problems include servo instability, flushing and dielectric issues, and generator faults. We work on both, along with the filtration and cooling systems they depend on.

Production machines

Makinos are built to run, so downtime hurts more

A Makino horizontal in a pallet system or an MMC line is often running three shifts and feeding an assembly line somewhere. When it stops, the clock starts. That changes how we approach the call: get it running safely first, then fix the root cause on a planned stop if the two can be separated.

Makino’s Professional controls are built on Fanuc, which means the alarm history, diagnostics and drives are familiar ground. The mechanics are where Makino goes its own way: high-speed spindles with their own cooling and lubrication, fast tool changers, and pallet changers with tight timing.

Makino EDMs are their own world. Wire threading, generator faults, filtration and dielectric quality decide most of what goes wrong.

What we do on a Makino call

Example service call

a61 horizontal stalls at the pallet change

The call

An automotive supplier in Schaumburg had a Makino horizontal stop mid-pallet-change with a sequence alarm, holding up a cell that fed their assembly line.

What we did

  1. Phone. A stall partway through a sequence usually means one step didn’t confirm. We asked which step the diagnostic screen showed.
  2. On site. The pallet clamp-confirm signal flickered as the pallet seated. The sensor’s cable had chafed against a cover.
  3. Fix. Repaired and rerouted the cable, replaced the sensor from van stock and protected the new run.
  4. Check. Cycled the pallet changer fifty times and ran a full part on each pallet.

The result. The cell was back running before the next shift.

A typical example of how these calls go, written to show our process. It isn’t a specific customer.

From the field

Habits for Makino owners

01

Watch spindle temperature trends

A spindle that runs a few degrees warmer each week is asking for attention.

02

Keep pallet locating surfaces clean

Chips on a pallet face cause clamp and accuracy problems.

03

On EDMs, change filters before they're desperate

Filtration drives finish, accuracy and wire breaks.
