Milacron and Van Dorn molding machine repair in Illinois

Milacron, Cincinnati Milacron and Van Dorn machines have been molding plastic in Illinois for decades. Some of them are older than the people running them. We keep them running.

Milacron repair in Illinois

Milacron, Van Dorn and the Midwest molding legacy

Milacron’s molding machines have a long history in the Midwest, and many Illinois plastics plants still run them. You’ll find Cincinnati Milacron and Milacron hydraulic machines, Van Dorn machines from before and after Milacron acquired the brand, Magna T and Q-Series machines, and all-electric Elektron and Roboshot machines across the Chicago area, some running for thirty years or more.

LocalSpindle techs work on Milacron and Van Dorn machines, including the hydraulics, heats, injection units, clamps, controls and the equipment around them.

Long-lived hydraulic machines

Older Milacron and Van Dorn hydraulic machines were built to last, and many are still running. Their common problems come from age: worn hydraulic pumps, sticking or leaking valves, worn cylinders and seals, accumulator problems, aging controls, failing displays and worn electrical components.

We repair hydraulic systems by testing pressures and flows, finding which valve, pump or cylinder is causing the problem, and repairing or replacing it. When a machine loses clamp speed or injection speed, the cause is often a worn pump, a valve problem or an accumulator that needs service.

Older controls

Many older Milacron machines run Camac or older Mosaic controls, and older Van Dorn machines have their own control generations. These controls can be hard to support as parts become scarce. Common problems include display failures, I/O board failures, memory and battery problems and power supply failures.

We support older controls, back up their data when possible, and can help you decide whether a control retrofit makes sense for a machine that’s mechanically sound.

Heats, injection and the barrel

Heater bands, thermocouples and temperature controllers fail regularly on older machines. Check rings, screws and barrels wear, causing inconsistent shots and screw recovery problems. We test heats and wiring, inspect injection components and help you separate machine problems from process problems.

All-electric Milacron machines

Milacron’s all-electric machines use servo motors, ballscrews and drives instead of hydraulics for most motions. Their problems often involve drives, motors, encoders, ballscrews and lubrication. We test drives and motors, check ballscrew condition and lube, and repair what’s failing.

Repair, retrofit or replace

A mechanically sound older Milacron or Van Dorn can keep running for years with good maintenance and, sometimes, a control retrofit. A machine with worn clamp components, a worn injection unit and an unsupported control may not be worth the investment. We’ll tell you which category your machine is in, and LocalSpindle can help you with a replacement if that’s the better path.

Long-lived machines

Old molding machines, new problems

A lot of Illinois molders run Van Dorn and Cincinnati Milacron machines that have been rebuilt and re-controlled over the years. The iron is solid. The problems are hydraulic wear, worn screws and barrels, aging wiring, and controls that are hard to find parts for.

Newer Milacron machines on Mosaic controls are faster and more efficient, and their problems lean toward sensors, drives and setup.

Example service call

Van Dorn losing clamp speed

The call

A molder in Franklin Park saw its Van Dorn’s clamp get slower over several weeks, adding cycle time.

What we did

  1. Phone. Slowing clamp motion usually points to the pump or a valve.
  2. On site. The pump was worn and the hydraulic oil was overdue.
  3. Fix. Changed the oil and filters and coordinated a pump replacement.
  4. Check. Measured cycle times after the repair.

The result. Cycle time back to normal.

Keep spare thermocouples and heater bands

They’re common failures.

02

Watch cycle time

Slower cycles warn of hydraulic wear.
